Seward Johnson's Life-Sized Sculptures
Returning to Spring Lake

Seward Johnson's Life-Sized Sculptures to Return to Belmar Area(Syd Whalley)

The life-sized sculptures of every day people that inhabited downtown Spring Lake in the fall of 2016 will be returning to the shopping district this spring, much to the delight of local residents and businesses.

The free, outdoor exhibit of sixteen bronze sculptures by world-renowned sculptor and New Jersey native Seward Johnson will be on display starting April 6 through the July 4th weekend.

A collaboration between the Seward Johnson Atelier, Inc. and the Spring Lake Business Improvement District, the Opening Ceremony will be held at 12 noon on April 6 at the Duggan Memorial Building (313 Washington Avenue) to welcome visitors from the tri-state area to Spring Lake to view the sculptures. The public is welcome, and refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

A self-guided tour map will be available at the Spring Lake Public Library as well as in many local businesses.

"We have been working with the Seward Johnson Atelier's curatorial staff to bring a collection of sculptures that are different from the 2016 exhibit. We will have items from Mr. Johnson's series, Celebrating the Familiar, because of its wide public appeal, as well as from Icons Revisited. We selected sculptures that we think everyone will enjoy," said Spring Lake Councilwoman and exhibit co-curator Syd Whalley. "We have a special treat in store for everyone who sees Uninvited Advice which will be on display near the flagpole at the lake.

Sculpture locations have been selected to provide the best photo opportunities for people viewing the sculptures. The sculptures, weighing between 350 and 900 pounds, are set upon steel discs that include bronze plaques showing the name of the sculpture and date of creation. When the sculptures arrive on large tractor trailers during the week prior to the opening, the Spring Lake Department of Public Works, under the watchful eye of Frank Phillips, will use heavy equipment to carefully move them into place.

Dawn McDonough, Executive Director of the Business Improvement District (BID) and exhibit co-curator, said, "Our community partners, including the Spring Lake 5, Circle BMW, and Peter Cancro have collaborated with us to enhance the visitors' experience of the exhibit. The whole town is excited to have this fabulous collection of sculptures here for a few months. I am personally looking forward to the fun we'll have with the sculpture across the street from Joe's Deli on Warren Avenue as you enter Spring Lake."

The exhibit is privately funded through monetary donations from local businesses and private individuals. Individuals and businesses that would like to make a donation to support the exhibit and the related informational materials may contact Ms. McDonough
at info@visitspringlake.com.

East Coast residents are familiar with Mr. Johnson and his work through the 42-acre Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Several local libraries offer free passes to the sculpture garden.

CHAMBER AND BID 42nd STREET BENEFIT SHOW
A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

Once again, the Theatre Benefit VIP reception and production of "42nd Street" was a resounding success. We send our heartfelt thanks to Pat Barry for this annual fund-raising opportunity for both the Chamber and the BID.

Of course it would not be possible without the generous contribution of food and delicacies from our amazing members. Year after year they never fail us and I urge all members to remember them when you are planning a party, going out for lunch or dinner, looking for a gift of fine chocolate or that special bottle of wine.

Thank you for your continued support – we couldn’t do it without you:

Egan’s Spring Lake Liquors,  Jean Louise Homemade Candies,   Joseph’s Delicatessen,  Larimar, Ray’s Café,  Spring Lake Catering,  Spring Lake Manor,  Spring Lake Pizzeria,  St. Stephen’s Green, Spring Lake Tap House,  The Breakers  On The Ocean,  The Mill Lakeside Manor,  Third Avenue Chocolate  and Tom Bailey’s Market

Be sure to make an effort to attend a performance of "42nd Street".  It was a wonderful production with the incredible musical and dance talent that we have become accustomed to from our "Little Broadway". If you are not familiar with the show, let me tell you that it has the most amazing tap dancing that you can imagine. Go and take your friends and family to enjoy those “dancing feet”.

2017 Spring Lake Italian Festival - Huge Success!

Well, a little late rain notwithstanding, it was an amazing day at the annual Italian Festival on Saturday. Town was packed to the brim with residents and visitors alike enjoying the music, art and especially the delicious, Italian specialties served up by our member restaurants.

This day doesn’t just happen; it takes months of work by the dedicated committee members lead by the chairperson – Joe Valentino of Joseph’s Delicatessen. It also takes funds that exceed the budget of the Chamber alone so we want to recognize those members who chipped in to help defray the cost of the music and entertainment, the staging and furniture, graphics and advertising, and many unforeseen costs that seem to pop up along the way.

Thank you to our chief sponsors: Joseph Raffetto of Raffetto Realty, John Nagle of Spring Lake Manor, the Pizzo grandchildren, Gibraltar Bank, Joseph’s Delicatessen and D’Amico & McConnell Realtors. Also thanks to very generous Chamber members and some businesses who are not even members: Kate & Company, Diane Turton Realtors, Spring Lake Pizzeria, Clayton Livery, Spring Lake Custom Golf, Pappas & Pappas, Healthy Day Café, Frederick Galleries, Sweet Pea, Tom Bailey’s Market, Flowers By Colleen, Chris Smith Realty, Main Pharmacy, Spring Lake Jewelers, Another Angle, Third Avenue Chocolate, Camel’s Eye, Jean Louise Homemade Candies, Bonnie O’Malley Realtor, The Irish Centre, Village Tweed, Skuby & Co, Coral Cove, and Bain’s Hardware.

Thanks to all of our members who sent flyers out to their email lists. We also appreciate the help that The Coast Star gives us in the form of articles and photos and a reminder to their readers of the great fun to be had at our festival. In short, it does take a village and ours pulled together and produced a great day in a great little town!

Warm regards, GSLCC

Spring Lake Variety Store, a Shore icon for nearly 70 years, set to close
(Courtesy: Shannon Mullen; Asbury Park Press)

Established in 1947, the downtown landmark sold everything from flip-flops to coffee percolator tops.

If variety is the spice of life, then Spring Lake is about to lose some of its distinctive, small-town flavor. The Spring Lake Variety Store, a fixture of the borough’s downtown since the 1940s beloved for its hodgepodge of hardware staples and esoteric necessities, is closing Sept. 30, apparently for good.

Owners Rick and Lynn Height, who have operated the Third Avenue store for nearly 23 years, say they’re retiring and moving full-time to their home in North Carolina. “It’s just our time to lay back and enjoy ourselves,” said Rick, 64, of Wall, whose father, the late Richard Height Sr., purchased the store from a prior owner in 1971.

(Photo Above: Mark R. Sullivan)

The couple had hoped to find a buyer interested in keeping the 3,000-square-foot business going before their lease expired at the end of this month, but that hasn't happened, leaving the building’s future up in the air for the moment. Since 1947 the store has been an invaluable resource in a town where folks would prefer to do their errands within a distance reachable by flip-flops, if at all possible.

Longtime owners Lynn and Rick Height are closing the Spring Lake Variety Store and moving to North Carolina.
“Having a store like this in a community like ours is extremely important. It allows you to shop locally,” explained Richard Clayton, the fourth-generation owner of Clayton Limousine Service, another Third Avenue landmark, who stopped in recently to pick up an order of rock salt for his business. “People are going to feel an impact,” added Clayton, who chairs the town's business improvement district board.

Previously a five-and-dime, much like a small Woolworth’s, Spring Lake Variety eventually evolved into a full-service True Value Hardware store, though it retained its wood floors, high, tin ceiling and neighborly charm.

(Photo Above & Below: Greater Spring Lake Chamber)

Despite a declining number of year-round residents in town, the Heights soldiered on, buoyed by strong summer sales, outlasting a litany of similar stores that acquiesced to competition from big-box retailers and online shopping sites years ago.

Now part of the Ace Hardware cooperative, Spring Lake Variety still has a sign out front from its days as a five-and-dime. Generations of children, often with a doting grandparent in tow, have worn a path down its toy aisle, which brimmed with old-fashioned jacks and Yo-yos, squirt guns, Nerf balls, badminton sets and stacks of classic board games — a must-have item on a rainy summer day at the beach. The store even sold spare dice, 99 cents for a pair.

Spring Lake Variety’s chief claim to fame, however, was its uncanny penchant for having the exact item the customer needed, however obscure. Knowing what the item was actually called wasn’t necessary; a reasonably coherent description of its function would usually suffice.

Whether customers came in search of shoelaces, buttons, shower curtain rings, a jump rope, vinyl replacement straps for patio furniture or that glass thingamabob that screws into the top of old-style coffee percolators, they were rarely disappointed. The oddball requests kept coming, even in the store's waning days, when many of the shelves were bare. What about a three-speed pull for a ceiling fan? Yep, Rick Height replied, still got one in stock.

Spring Lake Italian Festival features pasta eating contest, Italian car show and more
(By Caitlyn Bahrenburg; Coast Star)

The Italian Festival returns to Spring Lake this October, bringing the best of Italy to the shore. On Oct. 1, Morris Avenue between Third and Fourth avenues will be transformed into Little Italy for a day of food, festivities and fun beginning at noon. Advertisement Each year, the Italian Festival honors a local Italian American. This year’s honoree is Lou Russo of 94.3 The Point. “He does a lot of great work with the Ashley Lauren Foundation,” said Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce President George D’Amico. “It’s a great charity that works with kids with cancer. He’s on their board and does great work for them.” To celebrate Mr. Russo, Spring Lake will temporarily rename Morris Avenue “Lou Russo Boulevard” for the day of the festival.

While strolling Lou Russo Boulevard, guests can enjoy an array of Italian delicacies offered by Chamber member restaurants, cafes and delicatessens, including zeppoles, baked goods, honey and more. The festival will also offer a variety of vendors, face painting, balloon twisting, jugglers, an Italian car diplay, mock horse races and the annual Art Walk. Replacing the cannoli eating contest this year is a spaghetti eating contest. “We did cannolis last year but everyone got a tooth ache from the sweetness,” Mr. D’Amico joked. Throughout the event, guests will be treated to live music. Dominique and Julian will kick off the festival for the second year in a row, followed by a performance by the Rick Martin Orchestra at 4 p.m. For the first year, the hours of the festival have been extended to 8 p.m., replacing the after party. “We decided to encorporate the party into the end of the feast,” Mr. D’Amico said. “It’s going to be a fun family day,” he added. This year’s event sponsors include Coast Honda, Seacoast Chevrolet and Manahawkin Jeep.

Pedego Electric Bikes
Help You Bike from Spring Lake to Sandy Hook at Ease

Asbury Park Press and Greater Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce contributed to this blog post.

Pedego bikes have an electric motor powered by a lithium battery that can be charged in an ordinary household outlet. The bikes also has a throttle for "pedal-assist power" that offers greater speed with less effort.

"You choose how much the bike works for you and how much you want to do yourself," Levine said. "You don't have to pedal; it'll still move. It's great for people with knee issues, weight issues, anything that keeps them from doing what they'd ordinarily like to do."

Most models rent for $25 per hour,  $100 per day, or $400 for a week. Those without pedal-assist power rent for $18 per hour, $70 per day and $300 per week. Pedego Spring Lake opened in March at 217 Jersey Ave.  Summer hours, through Sept. 30, are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For more info, call 732-201-4117 or go to pedegoelectricbikes.com

A new business in Spring Lake offers a novel way to get around: Pedego Spring Lake rents and sells electric bicycles. They're not magic carpets, but they seem pretty close. Pedego co-owner Adam Levine, pictured with his wife, Monica, first rode an electric bicycle on vacation in Colorado.

"I've gone from Spring Lake to Sandy Hook and back — a 50-plus mile journey that I'd never take on a normal bike," said Adam Levine of Freehold, who co-owns the store with his father, Gil Levine. "It encourages people to go farther, and to enjoy the beautiful flat terrain we have by the water."

05.06.16 Cunningham’s Team Shamrock raises funds for Tunnel to Towers in honor of her late brother

SPRING LAKE — The Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce honored Kathleen Cunningham, the 2016 Citizen of the Year, in a ceremony as warm and heartfelt as its guest of honor.

On Thursday, May 5, friends, family members and community leaders gathered at the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club to celebrate Mrs. Cunningham, known as a selfless motivator, devoted mother and all-around cheerleader within her community.

“It was a very good turnout,” said Ellen Manger, the executive director of the Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce, adding that 220 guests shared in the evening.

Mrs. Cunningham was designated for the Citizen of the Year Award for her tireless efforts on behalf of her nonprofit organization, Team Shamrock. Team Shamrock raises funds to support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which builds ADA-compliant smart homes for disabled veterans.

“She was wonderful to work with,” Ms. Manger said of planning the evening with Mrs. Cunningham. “There is a little bit of responsibility that the honoree has to undertake with me and she was wonderful.”

When asked to describe how it felt to be honored by her community, Mrs. Cunningham responded, “Overwhelmed, surreal.

“I’m trying to take it all in and enjoy myself,” she said. “It’s a great night, I need to sit back and enjoy the ride.”

Among the many friends and family members present were Mrs. Cunningham’s father, Donald Robertson, who spoke during the ceremony; her friends Nancy Sanders and Edward Diamon; chamber President George D’Amico; and Patricia Laus, of the Atlantic Club, where Mrs. Cunningham has worked as a fitness instructor for years.

Mrs. Cunningham was also recognized by the Mayor of Spring Lake Jennifer Naughton and Assemblyman David Rible [R-30], and received congratulations from Congressman Frank Pallone [D-NJ], Gov. Chris Christie and Freeholder Thomas Arnone.

As the person who constantly works to raise others up, Mrs. Cunningham was not used to standing on this side of the spotlight.

“I like being the cheerleader, so it’s hard for me,” she said, humble yet proud of her organization and all of the good it does.

Not only was the event a big night for Mrs. Cunningham, it was a big night for Team Shamrock, as well.

The Chamber of Commerce donated a portion of the proceeds from the dinner to Mrs. Cunningham’s foundation and for her, that was the best part of the entire evening.

“That’s the cherry on the ice cream sundae,” she said. “To be honored is just amazing, to have all my friends here in this beautiful facility is just crazy, but to walk away with a donation for Team Shamrock and Tunnel to Towers is the best part of the whole darn night.”

THE WORLD'S CHEERLEADER

Mrs. Cunningham is the wife of Dr. Greg Cunningham and the loving mother of Sean, Patrick and Kaitlyn Cunningham.

Though she was not raised in Spring Lake, Mrs. Cunningham often jokes that she moved there as soon as she could.

Mrs. Cunningham is a lifelong cheerleader, beginning in grade school and continuing on to cheer for the New York Cosmos, Nets and Generals squads. Today, she volunteers her time as the coach of the St. Catharine School cheerleading squad and can be found cheering on her kids at all of their lacrosse games.

Her enthusiasm and spirit are hardly limited to her time as a cheerleader — she applies them to every aspect of her life.

“She is the cheerleader to the world,” said Mr. D’Amico.

From her job as a trainer at The Atlantic Club and a realtor at Chris Smith Realty, to her fundraising efforts for Team Shamrock, Mrs. Cunningham gives 100 percent of herself to everything she does.

“I’ve never met anyone with more energy or more goodness than Kathy,” said Frank Siller, the chairman and chief executive officer of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, who also spoke during the ceremony.

To date, Team Shamrock is just shy of reaching its $500,000 fundraising goal for Tunnel to Towers, which she formed in honor of her brother, Donald W. Robertson Jr., who died on 9/11.

Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a nonprofit organization that builds smart homes for disabled veterans. Each September, Tunnel to Towers hosts a run through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel into Manhattan to the 9/11 memorial, following the path of Stephen Siller, a firefighter who ran through the tunnel in full gear on 9/11 and lost his life trying to save others.

Mrs. Cunningham initially joined the Tunnel to Tower race as a solo runner in 2005. But after five years of running, she realized she could do more.

Thus, Team Shamrock was born.

Mrs. Cunningham’s current fundraising goal for Team Shamrock is $500,000, which will provide one complete smart home to a disabled veteran. Mrs. Cunningham plans to dedicate the home to her brother.

Thomas
Joseph Byrne III Obituary

Thomas Joseph Byrne III

AGE: 72 • Spring Lake

Thomas Joseph Byrne, III, 72, of Spring Lake, passed away peacefully on March 25, at home, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Tommy was a devoted husband, caring father, adoring grandfather and great friend.

Tommy was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in Spring Lake. He is a graduate of St. Catharine's Elementary School, St. Rose High School and Monmouth University. He spent his career as a real estate appraiser for the New Jersey Department of Transportation. He retired in 1997 after 31 years of service.

Tommy also had a distinguished career in public service. He served as the mayor of Spring Lake from 1990 until 2006. Aside from Rita, his boys and their wives and his six adoring grandchildren, being mayor was the love of his life. As mayor, he took tremendous pride in working with the Department of Public Works, the Spring Lake Police Department and the volunteers of the Spring Lake First Aid and Fire Departments. In addition to being the mayor, Tommy also served many years on the Spring Lake Board of Education and as a leader and coach for the Spring Lake/Sea Girt Little League. The Spring Lake Braves were a force to be reckoned with and those boys will always be in his heart.

Tommy was a lifelong resident of Spring Lake. The town will never know a more loyal and loving son. Loyalty was one of Tommy's finest traits. The New York Jets, Joe's Deli, Notre Dame and all the local high school teams were his heart and soul. The New York Yankees were also close to his heart. He adored Mickey Mantle, but when push came to shove, he preferred winning a bet against Joe Val than the Yankees winning.

Above all though, Tommy was a true family man. Rita was the love of his life, his boys were his pride and joy, their wives he adored and his grandchildren put a smile on his face every day. Tommy was blessed. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Harriet and Thomas Joseph Byrne II. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Rita, his son, Bryan, his wife Amy and their children Shayne, Luke and Ivy, and his son, Kevin, his wife Kristen and their children Myles, Kellan, and Madden. Tommy was also a beloved in law to Alice and Mike Lombardy, Dr. Michael and the late Mary Ann Cahill, Hugh and Joan Moriarty, Esther Moriarty, and the adored uncle to many loving nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his dedicated caregivers, Roxy and Akeile. His loving pets, Bailey, Ellie Mae, and Kane were also always at his side.

Tommy had a heart of gold and will be forever in our hearts.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 30 from 4-8 p.m. at Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street in Manasquan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 31 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake. Committal will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tommy's name to The Alexandra Rose Tozzi Foundation, P.O. Box 47, Spring Lake, NJ 07762 or SP Fast at www.spfast.com.

The Candlelight Christmas Inn Tour was held Saturday, Dec. 5.

By Kathleen Sorensen; Writer for Coast Star

SEE THE SPRING LAKE CHRISTMAS TOUR PHOTOS

SPRING LAKE — The annual Candlelight Christmas Inn Tour Saturday shared the magic of the holidays through visits with local innkeepers and their beautifully decorated establishments.

The self-guided tour on Dec. 5 took place between 3 and 6:30 p.m. It was sponsored by the Historic Inns of Spring Lake bringing hundreds of residents and visitors to the borough. Along the streets of Spring Lake, it was evident that something special was happening.

As participants walked from inn to inn, or home to home, they were able to enjoy unseasonably warm weather. Groups could be seen taking a break from the tour to look at the beach, before heading into the beachfront inns.

Ralph and Susan Defaria of Toms River were walking along the beach before continuing the tour by visiting The Breakers.

“This is our first time on the tour, but it’s not our first time in Spring Lake. We were married at The Breakers two years ago and decided to come back for the tour this year,” Mr. Defaria said.

“I love the warmness of the people that have opened their homes and inns to us. Everyone has gone over and above with desserts and drinks,” Mrs. Defaria said. “Everyone is very helpful with information and it makes me want to come back again.”

Throughout the tour, different inns and homes were decorated to the nines for the holiday season. Different holiday music, treats and more filled the rooms while participants enjoyed a thorough look into the inns of Spring Lake.

“Spring Lake is a beautiful town,” Mr. Defaria said. “It’s absolutely beautiful in the way it’s laid out, the homes, the inns and the people. Of all the shore towns, it’s a real gem and events like this are wonderful.

The tour allowed participants to visit inns, hotels and homes decorated for the holiday season with vintage ornaments, handcrafted heirlooms and an additional assortment of elegant holiday ware. Early birds were invited to tea and cookies at The Breakers from 2 to 3 p.m.

Tickets for the event were $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Anyone who had booked a room in one of the inns for the evening of the tour received a free ticket.

Seven inns participated in the tour, including The Breakers, Ocean House, Chateau Inn & Suites, Hewitt Wellington, Spring Lake Inn, Grand Victorian and The Duggan Building. Several private homes were also included in the tour.

Spring Lake

While the Jersey Shore might be more associated with the gaudy excesses of Atlantic City, some towns – such as historic Spring Lake – offer an altogether more refined seaside getaway. Hailed as the ‘Jewel of the Jersey Shore,' Spring Lake rose to prominence in the late 19th century when wealthy New Yorkers and Philadelphians flocked to spend their summers there, and many of its historic inns still stand today. Downtown Spring Lake boasts boutique shopping and eclectic eateries serving everything from casual grub to fine dining fare. Perhaps best of all, its scenic, uncrowded boardwalk is just a pleasant amble away.
